DIY Two Sided Coaster – Dad Is My Anchor

I have mentioned on my earlier post Best Things To Celebrate Father’s Day – With Anchor, that I have an ongoing Father’s Day project which involved an anchor. Well, this is it, I made a DIY Two Sided Coaster – Dad Is My Anchor. This diy would be a great idea for Fathers Day gift; not just because it’s handmade but also the meaning of “Dad Is My Anchor” that would melt any Dad’s heart.

Anchor (according to dictionary) is “a heavy object attached to a rope or chain and used to moor a vessel to the sea bottom, typically one having a metal shank with a ring at one end for the rope and a pair of curved and/or barbed flukes at the other.” Therefor, an Anchor is a symbol of safety and stability. In relation to that, “Dad Is Your Anchor” have a meaning of your Dad as your safety, someone you would hold on to. I think is a very strong statement, yet sweet and honoring for any Dads out there. And wouldn’t it be great to be used in a coaster as a gift on Father’s Day.

Now, let’s get our hands a bit dirty! Prepare first all the things you need to have for making this DIY Two Sided Coaster – Dad Is My Anchor:

Cork Mat
Burlap (Stiff type)
Glue for wood
White acrylic paint
Drawing Pen
Black brush pen

Not many things to prepared to make this easy handmade coaster. Let’s go through the simple steps to do DIY Two Sided Coaster – Dad Is My Anchor:

Cut the cork mat 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm) dimension in square.
Cut the stiff burlap with same dimension as the cork mat.
Glue together the square cork mat and the stiff burlap. Let it dry.
Cut the 4 corners in bevel to give a better look to the coaster.
Draw an anchor with drawing pen on the burlap side and write the words “Dad Is My” on the cork side of the coaster.
Paint the anchor sketch with white acrylic paint. Let it dry.

Finished! You got yourself a two sided coaster with the message “Dad Is My Anchor”. Cork side with “Dad Is My” and burlap side is a painted Anchor. A great way to express your appreciation to your Dad. Plus, a two sided coaster is a unique and functional gift for a Dad. Hope my DIY Two Sided Coaster – Dad Is My Anchor would be a Father’s Day gift inspiration or simply a birthday gift to Dads.

DIY Dog Ornaments From Cork Plate Mat

Recently, I bought some defected cork plate mat with a very good discounted price. The defects are considered very minor, only little chip and torn here and there. I know one day I can use it for some DIY projects. And for today project is dog ornament.

This little dog ornaments from cork plate mat can be used as little coaster, decorative ornaments, key chains, hang decoration, and many more. I have not decided yet what to use these dog ornaments are for.

Materials I used to make these dog ornaments are only :

1. Defected cork plate mat
2. Drawing pen
3. Scissors

It is very easy to make just following these steps below :

Determine the size and shape of the ornaments and sketch it into the cork mat. Mine is around 3 inches in diameter and have a shape of circle.
Cut out the ornament cork mat.
Draw the cut out circle cork mat as you desired. I drew 3 types of dogs, a friendly bulldog, a motherly Spaniel and two yorkshires; one is a bright little yorkie and the smaller one is a cute girly yorkie. If you have trouble with drawings, trace a printed dog image you wanted on the cork mat, then enhance the drawing with better fine lines.
Draw a line along the circle to frame the image on the cork mat.
The dog ornaments are ready! So simple and easy! Just made of defected cork plate mat only.

Let’s see what I’m going to use those ornaments are for. I still have to figure out something for that. Well, until then follow me for more DIYs.

DIY Word Puzzle From Art Foam Sheet To Help Kids Learn To Spell

Kids usually need fun way to learn something. In this case, learn to spell. Some learn the fun way of spelling from songs, books, and so on. Here, I use word puzzle to teach my kid learn to spell. By, solving the word puzzle over and over, the letters that create the word will automatically recorded in your child’s mind, without even realizing it. For that, I came out with the idea of making my own diy puzzle, so I can choose any words I want my kid to learn the spelling. I chose the art foam sheet because it is easy to cut, elastic so it’s quite durable and comes in many colors.

What things to prepare to make diy word puzzle from art foam sheet :

Colorful art foam sheets
Glue
Cutter
Pencil

Steps to make word puzzle to help kids learn to spell :

Determine words and object that you wanted to make for the puzzle. I chose the words “MOMMY” and “DADDY”.
Select the colors of the art foam sheets and cut it into sizes that you desired in three sheets. Mine is around 30 cm / 12 inches times 7 cm / 3 inches and I used green, purple, and brown art foam sheets.
Sketch the letters of each word on the cut art foam sheet. and add an object to make it interesting. I made star for “DADDY” and flower for “MOMMY”.
Cut the sketched letters and objects carefully.
I made it into two-sided puzzle to save the foam sheets. So, glue together the cut “DADDY” (brown) and plain foam sheet (brown) and the cut “MOMMY” sheet (green) like sandwich. Let it dry.
Copy the letters of cut-out “MOMMY” with flower and “DADDY” with star into other art foam sheets with different color. I had “MOMMY” in purple and “DADDY” in green. This is to have more thickness to the letters and objects so it will pop out and easier to be taken off and put it back on.
Then glue the cut-out letters and objects together and let it dry.
Glue back on the cut-out holes from letters, in my case are the letter D, A, O; onto the art foam sandwich. Let it dry.
Now, put back all the letters and objects where it belongs like you are solving a puzzle.
The word puzzle from art foam sheets is ready! and you do it yourself! Now, it’s time to help your kids learn to spell and have fun!

This would be a great activity and learning time for your kids, especially kids who love solving puzzles. You can get creative with the words and objects and the colors, like your child’s name with his/her favorite colors and shape.

I add the glitter star on “DADDY” star and flower ribbon on “MOMMY” flower to make it more interesting for kids. Anyway, this is a very easy and cheap project to do, but the value is high because it helps your kid to learn to spell and also play with puzzle, fun learning! So, have fun trying!

DIY Decorated Wall Hanger From Popsicle Stick

Hello again! Just a couple of days ago I have posted on how to make an organic rope ornaments. Today I’m going to use the ornaments to decorate a wall hanger from popsicle stick. Yes, more functional home decoration piece idea from ice cream / popsicle stick. Two other popsicle projects I have posted were painted coaster and a flower pot holder.

What do you need to DIY wall hanger from popsicle stick?

Popsicle sticks
Glue (for wood)
Spray paint – white color
Organic rope ornaments
Hangers
Drawer knobs

How to make a decorated wall hanger from popsicle stick?

Apply glue (for wood) evenly along the popsicle stick surface. Glue the ice cream sticks to each other one by one. Watch for the same length and width.
Line them all up until around 25 cm / 10 inches (or twice more the length of the popsicle stick).
Let it sit for a while until the glue dry and become a firm wooden panel.
Spray or apply white color paint to all the surfaces of the popsicle stick panel. Let it dry.
Tide around each both mini hangers with organic rope and secure it with wood glue. Let it dry. The purpose is to give more space from the hanger to the popsicle panel so that the nail / screw can fit in the hanger.
Glue the both tided hangers on to the back of popsicle hanger. Let it dry.
Glue three of drawer knobs onto the front of popsicle hanger. Let it dry.
Glue the organic rope ornaments (“love” word and love shape) onto the front of popsicle hanger by the upper area. Let it dry. You can use other ornaments you like, just be creative with it.
Your diy wall hanger from popsicle stick is ready! Now you can hang it.

It’s not a difficult project to do, easy, open wide for more creative twists and most important thing is you don’t need heavy tools to make a creation from a wooden material. Usually you have to saw some wooden plank to do this kind of project, but this… everything is glued, isn’t that great? Even your little ones can help you with this project.

How To Make DIY Decoration Ornaments From Organic Rope

Hello! Before I post more on making ice scream sticks decorations, I squeezed in a post about how to make a diy decoration ornaments from organic rope. This is an easy project to make, a little messy but worth to try. You can make a word, a letter, shapes, any ornament from only organic rope and wood glue. Really? Yes, really. So, let’s begin with the things you need and how to do it.

Things you need to make ornaments from organic rope:

Organic rope
Wood glue

How to make organic rope ornaments:

A “Love” word

Write down the word “love” in a flat plastic surface with wood glue.
Shape the organic rope carefully according to the glue word “love”. It’s a little bit messy on your fingers, but don’t worry, it’s easily cleaned.
Apply more glue on top of the word “love”, especially on the joint of two ropes.
Let it dry! It takes a while to be completely dry.
After it’s completely dry, the glue will looked clear, not white. Cut all the excess clear glue. Finished!

A love shape

Apply the wood glue in a flat plastic surface into a shape of heart.
Shape the organic rope carefully into the love shape. Start from the outer shape and continue to the inner shape.
Apply more glue on top of the love shape, to strengthen the organic rope shape.
Let it dry! It takes a while to be completely dry, so be patience. After it’s completely dry, the glue will looked clear, not white.
Cut all the excess clear glue. Now, your love shape made from organic rope and wood glue is ready!

It’s easy, right? And it is strong enough to stand and carry its own weight. So, you can apply the ornaments in horizontal or vertical way as you like. You can be creative and make more shapes or words from this easy technique. So, ask your kids to join and have fun making more wonderful ornaments of decorations with the organic rope and glue!

DIY Pink Dahlia Flower Pot Holder From Ice Cream Sticks

As I have promised on my previous post (DIY Painted Coaster From Ice Cream Sticks), I will show more how to make use of ice cream sticks with unusual way. I made those ice cream sticks into wooden plates. you don’t need to use heavy tool to cut wooden plank and make wooden decoration. It is convenient, practical, super easy and cheap. It only takes two delicate hands and glue to do it.

So, this time, another functional decorations to make, a flower-pot holder from ice cream sticks. to give more personal and summer touch, I will paint the flower-pot holder with a pink dahlia plus the wording “la fleur” (It’s a French, which in English means the flower).

What do you need to DIY pink dahlia flower-pot holder from ice cream sticks?

Ice cream sticks
Glue (for wood)
Spray paint – white color
Acrylic paint – red, white, green, black color
Paint brush
Scissors

How to make a pink dahlia flower-pot holder from ice cream sticks?

Apply glue (for wood) evenly along the ice cream stick surface. Glue the ice cream sticks to each other one by one. Watch for the same length and width.
Line them all up and make set of it. One is around 25 cm (or twice more the length of the ice cream stick), the second one is square in dimension, and the third one is around a dozen of sticks.
Let it sit for a while until the glue dry and become a firm wooden panel.
Spray or apply paint to all the surfaces of the ice cream sticks panel with white color paint. Let it dry.
Paint the longest panel on the top area with white acrylic paint. Paint the pink dahlia on the white-painted area and the word “la fleur”. Let it dry.
Glue the three panels in a way like on the picture.
Your diy pink dahlia wall flower-pot holder from ice cream sticks is ready.

You can be creative with the painting for the ice cream sticks flower-pot holder, the object, the colors or the wording. You can choose any theme according to your home color theme or simply your favorite color or favorite summer flower. I chose the soft pink dahlia which I love most for vintage shabby look, besides blue. And I painted the french word “la fleur” to add more vintage feeling. You can also mount it on the wall and become a wall holder, for that you might need an L shape steel on the bottom for strength .

I hope you can try my idea of making flower-pot holder from ice cream sticks with your own personal touch and find it easy, cheap, no heavy tools involved and fun. Well, have a good fun trying!

How To Make DIY Painted Coaster From Ice Cream Sticks

This is not a usual treat of ice cream sticks. Why? Because I made those ice cream sticks into a wooden plate. From there, I have some great ideas for functional decorations to make. I love functional decorations instead of just plain decoration. More meaning! More functional items in our home is better, something pretty yet useful. So, first thing first. On this occasion, I will show you how to make diy painted coaster from ice cream sticks.

What do you need to make a painted coaster out of ice cream sticks?

Ice cream sticks
Glue (for wood)
Spray paint – white color
Acrylic paint – red, white, black color
Paint brush
Organic rope
UHU glue

How to diy a painted coaster from ice cream sticks?

Apply glue (for wood) evenly along the ice cream stick surface. Glue the ice cream sticks to each other one by one. Watch for the same length and width.
Line them all up until it is square in dimension.
Let it sit for a while until the glue dry and become a firm wooden panel.
Spray or apply paint to all the surfaces of the ice cream sticks panel with white color. Let it dry.
Take organic rope and arrange it gently but firmly around the coaster surface by creating an inner frame. Glue it with UHU. Let it dry.
Paint the inner coaster with white acrylic paint to have more contrast. Let it dry.
Paint the wording and the mug with black paint. Let it dry.
Color the mug with red gradations and the help of white acrylic paint to get a 3D look on the mug. Let it dry.
Fill out some blank space on above and below corners with 3 red dots each. let it dry.
Your diy painted coaster from ice cream sticks is ready.

You can be creative with the painting for the ice cream sticks coaster, the object, the colors or the wording. I chose the red color for great contrast. You can choose any theme according to your home color theme or party theme or simply your favorite color / object.

The ice sticks became a solid wood and made into a strong and thick drink coaster. It can also used for bowl of hot soup coaster. It’s easy, cheap and fun to do. So, happy trying!

DIY Topiary From Coconut Coir

On my previous post, I have shown you how to re-purposing a cooker pot into a flower-pot. Since I made the flower-pot for decoration purposes, so I have to fill it with some decoration to complete its look. And I want to make the decoration from recycling something.

I thought to myself that a green topiary would be great for the flower-pot. Give it a purpose. But what should I made it from? I can easily buy some fake petals or synthetic leaves, but what is the fun of it? I have to make the topiary from something unusual but easily found, free, and easy. I need something durable to give some roughness on the topiary surface, a texture. Then I straight away think of coconut coir. And it’s cheap, well in my case it’s considered free. Because I bought the young coconut for consumption, enjoyed the sweet coconut flesh and water, then save the coconut coir to be dried under the sun.

So, what do I need to make a coconut coir topiary?

A young coconut coir
A wooden stick
A styrofoam ball
Green spray paint
Glue
Cardboard protector
A flower-pot
Ribbons

How to make the coconut coir topiary?

Dried the young coconut shell (under the intense sun) for couple of days, then shred the coconut coir, if it’s not completely dry, dry it again for a day or until it is perfectly dry.
Glue the shredded coconut coir onto the styrofoam ball until entire surface are covered nicely.
Wrap the coconut coir ball with plastic wrapper tightly to have the coconut coir glued evenly and perfectly into the styrofoam. Let it sit for half day before unwrap it.
Spray paint the coconut coir topiary with green spray paint.
Do the same to the cardboard protector.
Let it sit for a half day just to be safe.
Fill the flower-pot with the painted cardboard protector. Then arrange it until tight as a good base and fluffy until it rise up a bit from the flower-pot.
Connect the wooden stick to the styrofoam ball and to the cardboard protector base until it secure.
Tie some beautiful ribbons with the color that you favor to the wooden stick, right under the topiary. I chose neutral colors since I made this simple green topiary, so I used yellow and ivory ribbons. Finished!
You can use the topiary as an element to your home decor or party decor; can be as a center piece, a table or shelve decoration. It is suitable for spring or summer theme decor.

So, this is an easy and cheap project that anyone can do. The recycled flower-pot and the topiary from coconut coir, the topiary base from cardboard protector; together as a recycled decoration that cost you less. A Diy home decoration that comes from re-purposing three things.

Reminder Board For Him and For Her

I guess girls are accustomed to reminder boards, but what about guys? Some may keep their reminder in their journal or mostly in their mobile phone or tablet or computer. While girls are likely to have their reminder board somewhere in their home, could be in the fridge, kitchen, working desk, or in all of the places. I guess girls are relatively more organized and a better planner than guys? Plus, girls love and good at multi tasking, that’s why we love reminder board, a silent secretary! So, I guess a guy needs the silent secretary too, to keep them reminded while they sitting on their working desk at home, especially things that you wanted your hubby to remember.

When I was thinking about making a reminder board for my husband and myself, I came across this idea of making it into reminder board for him and for her. Because there’s no way guys wanna let you hang a pretty colorful with flowery or glittery reminder board on his working desk. He already nice enough to let you hang a reminder board for him. So, I try to think of something manly, neutral and of course easy and save cost! No need complicated and expensive reminder board for God’s sake, you will end up torturing the board with pins and tapes anyway. Then I came out with the plan to make For Him Board as if it’s a black wooden board and For Her Board is something also black but with colorful accent.

This is a list of materials that I used to make 2 reminder boards, 1 for him and 1 for me:

Styrofoam board 40 x 60 cm
Black paper thick 40 x 60 cm
Colorful stripes wrapping paper
Brown card
Glue

How did make the 2 reminder boards?

I cut the styrofoam board into 2 sizes, 40 cm x 40 cm and 20 cm x 40 cm. The big one for him and the smaller one for her. So, you got 2 shapes, square and rectangle.
I did the same to the black thick paper.
Then glue the black thick paper to each size of the board.
For Him Board, I continued with cutting the brown card to make the 2 cm wide frame of the board. I even cut the mitered corner for the frame to imitate wooden look. Then I glued all 4 sides carefully. Finished!
Now For Her Board, I find the wrapping paper looks like some kind of awnings, so I made it look like a front of a store. I cut 2 long stripes wrapping paper to cover the long sides of the rectangle. Glue it and finished!

Very easy and does not cost you much money to make reminder board for him and for her. I like to leave it as minimalist as I could, so that later I can fill it up in maximum and in a changeable charming way.

Okay then, it’s time for you to help your hubby to remind himself and yourself about important things by making this pair of reminder boards for him and for her.

Decor Your Photo Frames With New Fancy Look – DIY

I’ve been wanting to frame the picture of my mom and my son together and planned it to give her on mother’s day. first, I just buy some white minimalist frame for the picture. but then… I keep thinking that it’s a plain boring frame. so I decided to make it fancier by adding some beads to the frame. I used a golden look on the beads to match the background picture, which is gold.

I was only stick the beads one layer around the inner frame because I don’t want to over shadow the picture. If it’s a close up picture, then I will cover the entire frame with the beads.

So, there you go, a fancy sparkle photo frame.

Then I get so excited so I decor an old dark blue photo frame with sparkle beads to. I choose the bluish sparkle beads with shape of flower to match the frame color.

Look at the transformation, from an old dark photo frame into a sparkling fancy photo frame!

You can try other beads or decorations to give a new fancy look to your boring photo frame. Give a new life! And maybe it could be a great idea for a gift on Mother’s Day which is coming soon. With a little effort, you have given a meaning and personal touch to the photo frame which will elevate the memory captured in the photo that you’ve chosen as the gift.
